How to Paint With Light

Light painting is a photography method that was accidentally discovered and provides a creative and intriguing touch to a photograph. By using a very slow shutter speed the movement of light works as "paint" across the photograph. Painting with light definitely takes some preparation time but with a digital camera does not take long to process.

Instructions

    1

Decide what type of image you want to create with the sparkler or small torch. The plan is that you are going to move the torch to create a shape or image in front of the camera's shutter. The faster you move the torch, the thinner the lines will be.

    2

Set up the tripod in a dark room, and attach the camera. Make sure the camera is focused on the area you want to photograph, such as a corner or with a backdrop of colors. You will be in the picture holding the torch. Set the camera to the longest exposure possible, and set the photo timer.

    3

Stand in front of the camera when the shutter opens and begin moving the sparkler or torch in the pattern you want. Keep your body stationary while your arm or wrist moves the light. This will ensure you are in the picture. If you do not want to be in the picture, stand to the side and make the motions with your arms as desired, keeping your body out of the picture or blur yourself out by moving around.

    4

Check the appearance of your light painting in the digital camera's screen and repeat it again if you desire. Creating the light painting will take some practice.
