The Hna Highway is also called the Road To Hna and is one of the most well-known and popular scenic drives in the world. The road is 52 miles long and connects the Maui city of Kahului with the town of Hna in east Maui. The 52-mile journey to Hna takes about 3 hours--yes, 3 hours each way! The road is very narrow and winding and passes over 46 one-lane bridges, requiring oncoming traffic to yield, and there are approximately 620 curves along the highway. This is not a trip to be taken lightly. If you plan to go all the way to Hna, you will spend at least 6 to 7 hours on the road. There is a hotel and guest cottages in Hna, and some good restaurants, so it is possible to stay overnight and split the trip. Here I will discuss taking pictures along this photo-worthy highway.

If you are like me and don't like driving on narrow roads with few guardrails, find someone to drive with you that likes driving the long and winding road. Fortunately, my wife loves the challenge, which allowed me to take some video during the drive. The first part of the road is really like a two-lane country road, and I drove that part. There are plenty of places to pull off the road, especially early in the trip. I drove until it started to get "hairy" and then pulled off and let my better half handle the wheel. If you don't have a driver, there are many van tours and bus tours with hotel pickups.
2The road is the actual attraction and the drive is the destination. As you progress down the road you will have opportunities to pull off and take pictures. Don't forget to take some pictures of the road itself.
3As you progress, the frequency of places to pull over will become fewer until you get to Hna. This picture was taken from the car looking down on the road below. Your driver may become annoyed if you keep asking to slow down to take pictures. There was nobody behind us at this point, so it didn't matter. If you are renting a car, get a convertible. Frequently on Maui, convertibles are the best deals anyhow. Convertibles allow you to shoot over the driver, so you can capture images along both sides of the road.
4When you are in Hawaii for a while, you will realize you can spend your whole day wearing sandals or no shoes at all. This is not recommended for this drive. You will want to stop and walk around for a while, if for no other reason than to see the jungle and forests along the road. It is also a strenuous drive and the driver needs to rest. There are many jungle-type paths to walk and scenic views to stop and see.
5I don't think anyone knows how many waterfalls there are along the road to Hna. Some pour into scenic pools like this one pictured; others just seem to drop out of site. The road hugs the rugged coast, but to the interior there are lush jungle rainforest areas.
6When you get to Hna, if you don't pay attention, you will miss it. It is just a laid-back resort town with one major hotel and a number of smaller bed and breakfast places. There is a small airport, and you can also arrange for helicopter rides from the more populous parts of Maui if you don't want to drive the road. Just beyond Hna is the famous Seven Sacred Pools, which is part of Haleakala National Park. You can arrange for helicopter rides and tours directly to the Seven Sacred Pools and skip the whole car ride if you prefer. I wouldn't do it--the Road to Hna isn't just another country drive--it is a photographer's dream.
