Photo Printing with Special Effects

Most photo-editing programs have filters or plug-ins, like starbursts or glowing edges, that you can use to alter the mood of your photograph. Digital photography and photo-editing programs make it easy to experiment with these effects. If you have a professional program for photo editing, such as Adobe Photoshop, start with some easy alterations, then produce high-quality effects with mattes and layers.

Antiquing

A simple way to give your photo printouts an old-fashioned look is to apply the antique effect. Make sure to duplicate the photo before you begin, so you have a copy of the original. The antique application will fade the colors and bump up the yellow hue, giving your photo a "washed out" look typical of old color photographs. You can recreate this look on your own in Photoshop. Look under "Image" for the "Adjustments" menu. Then desaturate the image colors in the hue/saturation box, heighten the contrast in the brightness/contrast box and tone down the green, blue and cyan in the color balance box until you achieve the desire effect.

Posterize

Posterize colors and convert your photo to "pop art" mode. The posterize effect reduces grades of similar color to one flat color, resulting in color blocks similar to those found in a litho or screen print. Some photo-editing programs have a posterize option. In Photoshop, you can control the levels of posterization under "Image" and "Adjustments" and "Posterize." The levels of posterization go from 2 to 255. Increasing levels will bring your photo closer to its original coloring.

Blurred Background

A blurred background is an effect often used on portraits or close-ups of objects, like food or flowers. To get a blurred background, you need to separate the foreground object from the background using a matte. This can be done in photo-editing programs like Photoshop by outlining the foreground object with a pen tool, making a selection of the outline, and then using the eraser and brush tool in mask mode to soften and tighten your mask for your matte. Once you have your object selected, copy and paste the selected pixels to a new layer and apply a gaussian blur to the background layer behind it. Use the blur and eraser tools to soften the edges of the foreground image against the background.

Color Adjust

Changing the color of your photo can be as easy as applying a simple "color boost" effect in your photo-editing program. If you want to adjust specific colors to change the tone of your photo, you need a professional photo-editing program like Photoshop. Experiment with the color balance box by changing the levels of red, green and blue in RGB mode or cyan, magenta, yellow and black in CMYK mode. Adjusting the contrast, levels and saturation of your photo in the adjustment menu boxes can boost the output of faded images and will transform the color of your photo for a vivid final printout. Save and print your files at 300 dpi (dots per inch) or higher and use premium photo paper for your printouts in order to capture the detail of your special effects.
