Astrophotography may sound complicated and to some extent it is. Astrophotography is the process of obtaining images from deep in space. Before you can begin you will need a reasonably powerful telescope and a high spec Digital SLR camera. By attaching your camera to the telescope and using ImagePlus software to control your settings you will be able to take your own deep space photographs. By following a few simple steps you can learn the basics of astrophotography.

Attach your digital SLR (DSLR) camera to the telescope using the t-adaptor and t-ring. Screw the t-adaptor and t-ring together. Carefully remove the lens from your camera before screwing the combined t-adaptor and t-ring onto your camera in place of your lens. Insert the combined adaptor-ring into the telescope eyepiece holder directly; make sure the thumbscrew is tightened to secure the camera in place. Attach the camera strap to the telescope in case the camera falls.
2Adjust the camera settings. Set the mode dial on the top of your camera to manual, which is represented by the letter "M." Set the shutter speed to "Bulb" and the Image quality to "RAW."
3Center a star in the DSLR field of view. Run the ImagePlus software by double clicking on the desktop icon and click on the "Focus" tab. Click the "Release" button to take a short exposure on the DSLR camera. Draw a small frame around the star then click on the star when prompted. Click the "Release" button to take another reading. Adjust the focus then repeat this process until the "Current Best" pixel value cannot be improved. This means you will have the best possible focus.
4Set up custom shutter control. Open the "ImagePlus Camera Control" program. Select your camera in the camera menu. Click on the "Bulb Capture" tab from the menu. Click the reset button to set the shutter sequence parameters to the standard setting. Attach your camera to the computer using the cables provided with your camera and turn your camera on. Select the "Connect" tab in the control window before selecting your camera and clicking the "Connect" button.
5Choose where to store your images. Click on the "Transfer" tab in the control menu and use the "Select" button at the bottom of the window to choose the location where you want your images to be stored.
6Edit the default shutter sequence parameters by clicking the "Edit" button under the "Bulb Capture" tab in the control window. Set the interval, exposure, total exposures and ISO. Click the "Save" button to save your settings.
7Take your astrophotography pictures. Click the "Release" button and your camera will follow the instructions you have put into the "ImagePlus Camera Control" program and take the image.
