How to Photograph Dancers Underwater

Underwater photography is both challenging and rewarding. Whether you're taking photos of underwater wildlife or of dancing human models, this medium requires much preparation for set up and safety. Finding the right location and the right time of day is key for the success of the photo. Having patient models is also important due to the time it takes to set up. But the results can be impressive when it comes to underwater photography, so take the time to experiment.

Instructions

    1

Find a swimming pool or a clear lake. If you intend on using natural light, make sure your location is well lit. Note the time of the day that your location is best lit.

    2

Have everything ready and planned out before you start the photo shoot. This includes the lens that you will use, prop placement, the placement of the model, the placement and angle of the camera, and if needed, the placement of your lighting.

    3

Set the aperture and shutter speed of your camera to meet the requirements of the photo. If you wish to avoid blur, you will need to set your shutter speed to at least 1/400 or above, which will limit the range of your aperture. It is best to use a fast lens to avoid this problem.

    4

Instruct your model(s) on their form and placement, then have them do a few practice runs before entering the water. You will need to be under water for at least 20 seconds.

    5

Instruct your model(s) to gently enter the water with you. Before going under, it helps to rapidly breathe four to seven breaths and then hold, which will oxidize your blood. Instruct your model(s) to do the same and then go under the water to your placements.

    6

Allow bubbles to clear and wait for the model(s) to get into position. Take as many photos as you can, and then return to the surface. Repeat this as many times as you need to get the photos you want. Review your photos to make sure you have the shots you want.
