How to Blur the Background of a Photgraph

Learn how to blur the background of a photograph to draw attention to the subject that is positioned closest to the camera. A busy background can take away from the focal point of your image. It can be distracting because of the amount of excess detail that draws the eye. Blurring the background will also cause the background subjects to appear further away than they really are. Capture this effect by altering the camera's focus and the depth of field.

Instructions

    1

Lower your camera's depth of field to reduce the distance away that your camera is able to focus. Do this by setting the aperture to a high level. The higher the aperture, the wider the lens opens when you take the photograph and the shorter the depth of field will be. Read your camera manual to discover how to alter the aperture on your particular camera model.

    2

Look through the viewfinder of your camera. Find an object that you want to photograph, such as a person, flower or coffee mug.

    3

Place your camera on a tripod to prevent camera shake, and keep your hands free. Alternatively, hold the camera steady with one hand and use your free hand to twist the lens to alter the focus. Play around with the focus until your chosen object is in focus and the background is out of focus. The object should appear sharp and the background blurred.
