Modern photographs are simply treasured scrapbook keepsakes for many people. For others, photographs are an art form, unique images meant to be hung and admired. Indeed, whether you are a novice or an expert, photography is a hobby that allows for great creative flexibility. There are innumerable subjects to be captured, and different sizes, shapes and finishes allow you to make each completed print one-of-a-kind. If you are looking for a natural way to add vintage flair to your photographs, tea dying the light-colored backgrounds and highlights of the images can give them an aged, timeless look.
Instructions
- 1
Scan original photographs into your computer; never dye original photographs just in case something goes awry. Print out the photographs using high-quality matte or semi-matte paper. Do not use any other paper finish, as the tea will not adhere to the paper, and the paper color will not change.
2Brew a pot of strong black tea. Use five to ten teabags, depending on how dark you wish the color to be. Experiment with pieces of blank paper to find the perfect shade.
3Allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Lay the first photograph in the bottom of a shallow dish large enough to hold the picture without bending any of the edges, such as a casserole dish. Cover the photograph with the tea.
4Let the picture sit under the tea for one minute as you gently rock the dish back and forth to keep the tea moving. It is very important to use heavy paper and not standard printer paper, as regular paper will not stand up to exposure to liquid. Lift the image out with your fingers and dunk it in and out of the tea for four to five minutes until you are pleased with the color.
5Hang the picture on a clothesline to dry completely. Clip the photograph at the very edge to avoid marring the image. If you do not have a clothesline, stretch twine across a room with an easy-to-clean floor and secure both ends to create a place for hanging your pictures.
6Frame your tea-dyed photographs once they are dry. Select neutral-colored frames and mats to highlight the antique feel of the images. Hang or store your pictures out of direct sunlight.
