The Instructions for Bainbridge Mat Cutters

Bainbridge is a name brand of mat cutters used to cut mats for framed art or photos. There are several types of mat cutters, but the tabletop mat cutter is the most efficient. Framing your artwork in matting makes the artwork easier to sell and gives the artwork a clean and professional look. Just like with your artwork, you can get really creative with your mat board and use several colors for one piece of artwork or cut the inside of the mat board in different shapes, such as an oval, a triangle, a rectangle or a square.

Insert the sharp blades into the blade holders. The blade holder location varies on the different types of Bainbridge mat cutters. To insert the blades, most models are simple to use: loosen the knob, slide the blades inside and then tighten the knob.

Use the ruler on the mat cutter to measure and cut the mat board down to size. Typical sizes for matting are 8 inches by 10 inches, 11 inches by 14 inches, 16 inches by 20 inches, and so on.

Cut the inside border from the matting in accordance with your specifications of your artwork. For example, if your picture is 5 inches by 7 inches and you cut the size of the mat board to 8 inches by 10 inches, then the interior border would need to measure 4 inches by 6 inches. Use the rulers on the mat cutters to measure the appropriate area and then press the blade into the mat board to cut out the center.
