How to Make a Black Backdrop

Studio photography often requires the use of solid color backdrops. The backdrops enhance the photo's composition and permit photographic subjects to be extracted and placed over digitally enhanced backgrounds. Photographers using canvas and paint to create a backdrop may find this method is too time consuming. Opting for muslin fabric and black dye will be faster and ensure an even colored background.

Instructions

    1

Buy white "Muslin" fabric from a fabric store. Muslin is a thin, fine cotton fabric that is used to make film set, theater and photography backdrops. To create a 6 ft. backdrop, purchase 4 yards of the fabric. A 10 ft. backdrop will require 6 yards of muslin fabric, and a 20 ft. backdrop will need 8 yards. of muslin fabric.

    2

Purchase 1 to 2 black powder or liquid fabric dyes, such as Rit Fabric Dye. This dye is available in the shirt isle of craft stores, and detergent isles of supermarkets and retail stores. Also purchase a 36-inch wood dowel to stir the fabric.

    3

Put the rubber gloves on and fill the bucket with hot water and the powder or liquid dye according to the dye label's instructions. Mix the dye into the hot water using the wood dowel. Soak the muslin fabric in the sink under the hot water until fully soaked.

    4

Immerse the soaked muslin fabric into bucket using the wood dowel, to create the black backdrop. Once inside the bucket, stir the muslin fabric inside of the dye for 15 minutes or as indicated on the label. For best results, stir the fabric constantly inside of the bucket for 30 minutes.

    5

Remove the fabric from the bucket once the time is up, then rinse it under lukewarm to cold water in the sink. Continue rinsing the fabric until the water runs clear, then place the fabric into the washer and clean the sink with bleach. Wash the backdrop along with mild or gentle detergent in warm water. Lay it out to air dry after washing.

    6

Cut straight edges on each side of the backdrop with scissors, then place double sided hem tape on the fabric edges. Fold each side of the backdrop one inch over to the backside of the fabric, then iron the edges to fuse the tape to the fabric.
