The permanent imprints of images can be re-created to produce the holographic effect and the art is known as photo engraving. It is also called as photo-chemical milling. Photos are taken and then the images are recorded on hard surfaces. Colored or black and white images can be engraved on wooden, glass, acrylic or jewelry items.

History

Discoveries which eventually led to the process of photo engraving began during the late eighteenth -- early nineteen century. A French scientist Joseph Nicephore Niepce, laid the basis for photo engraving by making the first photographic image and discovering a chemical, which upon exposure to light became insoluble. Louis Daguerre, with his research in the field of chemical development, paved the way for advancements. William Henry Fox Talbot took the research to next level where he developed the technique, which, by use of a fine meshed screen, converted the picture into dots.

Process

The developments in the field continued since those initial discoveries and currently the process of photo engraving is completely developed. The most common method of photo engraving is holographic photo engraving. In the process CNC machinery is used to punch with the tip of a diamond and thus create a dotted pattern of the digital image. The image is recreated on a metal plate. Smaller dots impart the effect on the darker areas of the image, while deeper dots work on the highlighted parts.

Prerequisites

If an image is to be engraved, it must not be blurred. Low quality images can be engraved, however the output will be equally inferior. The image should be at least 2"- 3". During the photo engraving process and post completion, the original image stays intact. If the photo is available as a soft copy, it must be minimum 300dpi and in JPEG or TIFF or BMP format.

Personalized Gift Item

The digital images can be engraved on glass items, wooden items, acrylic, jewelry and other gift items. The recreated imprints of these digital images impart the personalized appeal for gift items. Any kind of image like a company's logo or human faces or religious figures can be engraved. Depending upon the purpose, the selected image can be combined with a gift item of choice. For example, if it is a house warming party, engraved glasses could serve the purpose.
