Professional Posing Techniques

To be a model or a photographer, it is essential to know how to pose. The camera picks up every flaw, and it will capture the poor technique of a novice, either in front of the camera or behind it. Therefore, knowledge of and practice of professional posing techniques are required to get noticed in the competitive market.

Observation

Learning how to pose as a model or directing the pose as a photographer can be seen as essential preparation to becoming a professional. One of the ways to learn is to observe. By watching people in their natural environment, a model and photographer can see natural real-life poses. Observation can provide creative ideas for the photographer for setting the scene for a photo shoot, while the model can practice different poses based on research into natural and spontaneous behavior.

Warm-Up

Before beginning the photo shoot, it is important for the model to warm up the body so that he can be relaxed while posing. A combination of cold weather and pre-shoot nerves can cause the body to tense up, so doing a series of body stretches and shaking out the limbs will help to relieve muscle tension. Start the warm-up by tensing up different body parts for a few seconds, and then relaxing to release any tension. Shake the arms and legs out. To improve standing posture, do a body roll. Do this by rolling the head down slowly. Follow with the neck, shoulders and back until the body is bent fully forward with arms hanging toward the floor. Gently sway the arms from side to side before coming back up slowly, a little at a time, to a standing position.

Direction

A photographer in a photo shoot needs to set the scene, as well as to be able to direct the model into poses to achieve the visuals the shoot requires. The themes will be dictated by the prerequisites of the type of photo shoot -- wedding, portraiture or advertising. Therefore, she needs to know what her clients want from the shoot. A good preparation technique to help with direction is for the photographer to make a list of notes pertaining to themes and emotions that she wishes to capture within the shoot. Creating a basic visual storyboard would also be of benefit to the photographer, as well as to the model, as a point of reference.

Engaging With the Camera

A model needs to project personality or a given character in a photo shoot, depending on the theme. Taking a few acting classes would be of benefit to help a model to practice a variety of characters and to learn how a pose can project a specific energy or emotion. In the photo shoot, a model needs to listen and take direction in order to help with posing. Importantly, he needs to engage confidently with the camera, in a playful and uninhibited way, moving naturally and spontaneously from one transition to another, as if he is leading the camera within the photo shoot.
