How to Photograph Choirs ~ Enhance Photography Skill

Photographing a choir presents several challenges that can be tricky to overcome. For one, the lighting inside churches often has lots of yellow tint, which can create unnatural skin tones. Photographers are usually prohibited from using a flash when shooting choirs, so managing light becomes even more critical, and longer exposures are then needed to compensate for low light. However, with good preparation, shooting choirs can be enjoyable.

Instructions

Use a wide-angle lens to capture all of the choir and enable experimentation with different camera positions.

Place the camera on a tripod, and, while looking through the viewfinder, move it around until you can get the choir fully framed in the lens.

Use the "rule of threes," a composition technique in which you overlay an imaginary tic-tac-toe grid over the image to get as many members of the choir clustered around the intersection of the imaginary grid lines.

Adjust the white balance in the camera through the manual white balance to between 3000 and 4000 K to compensate for the excessive yellow light. Take several practice shots to dial in the best white balance.

Shoot in aperture priority and set the aperture to f/11 for the first shots. Try f//16 and f/22 as well to create the largest depth of field with all of the choir in focus.

Use a remote trigger to minimize any camera shake that can be created by pressing the shutter when taking the picture.
