Creating more vibrant or interesting photos is possible by understanding the color wheel and applying that knowledge to your photo sessions. The color wheel most appropriate to consider in photography is the RGB or red, green, and blue color wheel. It is known as additive color. All the colors in the color spectrum are made from these primary colors and equal amounts of them create white light. Yellow, cyan, and magenta are known as the secondary colors and are positioned in-between the primary colors. Studying their positions on the color wheel will help you understand how certain combinations of colors are more intense or subtle than other combinations.
Complimentary Colors
Complimentary colors, or colors opposite of each other on the wheel, make for more intense color combinations. Blue and yellow, red and cyan, and magenta and green are complimentary color schemes. Blue and yellow create the most intense contrast because even at a pure intensity yellow is the brightest color and blue the darkest. Magenta and green have the least amount of contrast.
Harmonious
Colors that are harmonious are positioned next to each other on the color wheel. Harmonious colors that fall between the secondary and primary colors are called tertiary colors. Primary, tertiary and secondary colors adjacent to each other, such as blue, purple and magenta, create a photo pleasing and soothing to the eyes.
Lighting
Indirect light helps harmonize a color scheme to create a subtle effect. Direct light creates an even bolder photo using a complimentary color scheme.
Color Balance
Color creates a mood, and changing the color balance in a photo may help create a better expression of the mood. Warm colors like orange are inviting while blues and green are soothing but less interesting. Reds demand attention.
One Color
Designing a photo around a solitary color and surrounding it with a neutral color like gray, brown or beige makes spectacular photos and help you understand the language of each color.
