Should I Use a Circular Polarizing Filter on My DSLR?

    Circular polarizers reduce glare.
    Circular polarizers reduce glare.

They Reduce Glare

Circular polarizers are camera filters that block glare. Blocking glare can remove reflections from windows and the surface of water. However, glare is reflected by a number of things, including small particles of dust and droplets of water in the air. Removing that glare can reduce the effect of haze while also deepening the color of blue skies.

They Have Drawbacks

By reducing reflections, circular polarizers reduce the amount of light that the camera sees. Because of this, you will need to increase exposure by approximately 1 1/2 stops. In some situations, this can be challenging. In addition, circular polarizers add an additional piece of glass to the lens, increasing the risk of internal glare as well as vignetting.

Bottom Line

Although circular polarizers are not a panacea, they are one of the most useful accessories for a DSLR, or digital single-lens reflex, camera. Between eliminating reflections from glass and water and reducing the effects of haze, they have an effect that is almost impossible to reproduce digitally.
