How to Take Close Ups of People

Photography is an art form, but you don't need to be a professional to take a good close-up shot. Having a decent camera and learning a few basic tips and tricks will allow you to take great portraits. But don't expect to be an expert right away. Practice is, of course, required. But if you enjoy photography, then it shouldn't be tough. Take as many close-up portraits as possible, using different subjects in different environments. Experiment with different styles until you get the kind of shot you're looking for.

Instructions

    1

Set your camera to Macro. This is the setting typically used for taking portraits. Most of the time, it's symbolized by a flower.

    2

Choose an environment with plenty of light and leave your flash setting alone. If there is too much light, reduce the flash, if possible. You can do this by covering the flash in tissue paper or altering the setting on your camera (if applicable).

    3

Make sure the background isn't too distracting. Have your subject stand somewhere where there's not too much "noise" in the background. Change the focus on your camera so that your subject is the main focal point.

    4

Set your camera on a tripod to prevent unnecessary shaking, which causes the subject to go out of focus.

    5

Zoom in, or move closer, until your subject's head and shoulders are the only part showing. This is typically how close ups are taken. However, you may also zoom in very close, showing only the face. Ask her to look directly into the camera, or have her focus on something off to the side, to get a more candid shot. Take many different pictures.

    6

Learn about the rules of thirds (see link in "Resources") to get more experimental angles. This is a simple rule that breaks each shot into nine equal sections. Putting your subject into certain sections gives the picture a more interesting look, rather than a simple straight-on shot.

    7

Experiment with different lighting, backgrounds, angles and subjects. Take pictures up close and from farther away. Take pictures indoors and outdoors. Change the shutter speed to capture different lighting effects. Add props, or talk to your subject and take candid shots. The more you experiment, the more you'll learn about photography itself, as well as which styles you enjoy shooting in.
