Lighting Eyes in Photography

Many photographers consider the eyes the most important part of a portrait. Using certain lighting techniques is important to bring out the best features in the eyes and to avoid harsh, unflattering shadows and red eye. These tips will help even novice photographers create photos with perfectly lit eyes without using expensive tools, regardless of whether you are shooting with a point-and-shoot, digital camera or an SLR.

A flash can be used outdoors to effectively banish shadows under eyes.

Keep the flash from washing out your subject. Whether using your flash indoors or out, it can give your subject a harsh, washed out look if not done correctly. If your flash moves, bounce it off a white, flat object onto your subject. This will soften the light.

Another way to soften the look of your flash to avoid washed-out eye color is to back away from your subject. The farther away you are, the softer the flash on the eye area.

Move to an angle. Red eye is created by flash light bouncing from the eyes back to the camera lens. When you take photos of the eyes from an angle, the flash lights them but doesn't bounce back into the lens.
