Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is good light in the eye of the photographer. No one type of light can be universally called "the best light." The emphasis in finding good light, therefore, is not on the "good" aspect but on the "finding" aspect. A basic knowledge of different types of lighting and how they affect your photography will help guide you to the light that best complements your subject and style.

Establish your goals. Imagine what you want for a finished photo. Do you want clear, crisp photography, or more of an artistic effect? Portrait photography generally requires softer light and no harsh shadows. Landscape or creative photography, on the other hand, often incorporates shadows for contrast and artistic effect.
2Watch the weather. A weather front unfit for a picnic is probably ideal for photography, notes the book, "Mastering Photographic Composition." Take note of weather that changes rapidly, such as at the tail end of a storm where chaos evolves into calm. Look for how light filters through dissipating clouds.
3Observe the time of year. Steeper, more horizontal light is better for taking portraits and photos in which you don't want shadows. Taking photos until the winter months offers you more opportunities to take photographs that have softer shadows. Since the sun hits the earth at a steeper angle during these months, more hours during the day provide better lighting.
4Observe the time of day. The same principle applies to the time of day. During the summer months, the best time to take portrait photographs is about an hour after sunrise or before sunset. These times are often referred to as "the magic hours."
5Use nature. If you must shoot during the times when more vertical light shines and creates harsher shadows, offset the effect by using natural landmarks. Position a subject, such as a person, under a tree that has extensive, thick branches. This will reduce the overhead light and mitigate shadowy effects.
6Use artificial tools. Some tricks of the trade will help you create good light when you can't find it. A light panel functions, basically, like an umbrella, and reduces overhead light. Don't remove overhead light completely, though. Allow just enough to light the top of the face and complement the horizontal light.
