The Best Bird Photography Sites

You might assume that bird photography is a nearly impossible hobby for the casual photographer. Birds move quickly, and setting up the perfect shot without knowing how long a bird might linger can be frustrating. However, there are several well-produced websites, ranging from professional to personal sites, which assert that bird photography is, in fact, something easily mastered by anyone with a digital SLR camera.

Mike Atkinson Bird Photography

Mike Atkinson's bird photography site covers all the bases of bird photography, offering detailed tutorials, photo galleries, links and one-day workshops. His free tutorials include basic photography topics such as camera settings, equipment, and basic composition. He also writes on more particular aspects of bird photography, such as birds and water, basic field techniques and how to photograph different types of birds, such as wildfowl or garden birds.

David Hemmings Bird Photography

World-renowned for his bird photography, which is displayed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and published in National Geographic, David Hemmings operates a site featuring his photos and art prints, as well as information about his workshops and tours. His photo albums exemplify professional composition and technique, listing birds by type (such as snowy owls, birds of Belize, and shorebirds). His nature photography workshops and private lessons take place all over the world.

Ken Rockwell's How to Photograph Birds

Unlike David Hemmings who has made his profession photographing birds, Ken Rockwell takes photos for fun and operates his site, How to Photograph Birds, simply as a hobby. Ken Rockwell gives advice on what makes a great bird photo, as well as what attitude to assume when you're on the prowl with your camera in hand. He also recommends what kind of equipment to use based on your budget, for example, what to buy under $100, or what to buy in the $5,000-$9,000 price range.

Nature Photographers Online Magazine: Bird Photography

A section of the Nature Photographers Network Official Website, this site provides a long list of links to relevant articles on the subject of bird photography. These articles mostly pertain to specific situations that a photographer might encounter when taking pictures of birds; titles include "Armchair Nature Photography," "The Dos and Don'ts of Nest Photography," and "Top Ten Tips for Photographing Small Birds." In addition, the site's Avian Image Critique Gallery and Bird Photography Discussion Forum allow viewers to connect to other photographers by commenting on posted bird photos or discussing technique and location for bird photography.
