How to Make Airbrush Effects on Photos

Photo retouching has become commonplace since the boom of digital photography. Many people are learning how to retouch their own photos rather than paying a professional to do it. An airbrush effect is common to create a perfect skin look. However, a poorly airbrushed image can easily make a photo look cheap and fake. When taking on the task of editing a photo yourself, do it properly to avoid giving your subject's skin a pasty or plastic look.

Open the photo you want to airbrush in your editing software.

Select a soft brush from your software's brushes. If your software does not include a soft brush, many websites will allow you to download brushes to add on.

Use the color selection tool to grab a color from a section of skin that is even-toned and free of blemishes. Don't pick the color from areas that are red or splotchy.

Create a new blank layer on top of your photo and select the new layer.

Set the opacity of the layer to about 20 percent as a starting point. Adjust this later if desired.

Use the brush tool to paint over the entire skin of your subject. This will even out the skin.

Use the eraser tool to correct any areas you may have accidentally colored over, such as the eyes or lips. Decrease the opacity of the eraser and use it to brush over areas you want to add more definition to, such as the nose.
