When taking professional-looking photos, a technique that many photographers use involves blurring the edges of a photograph. This technique allows the foreground and subject to stand out in sharp contrast from the rest of the image, providing the shot with a strong focus. This can be done in two ways. The first requires that the photographer capture the photo with blurred edges. The second allows the photographer to capture the photo normally and then later digitally edit the image.
Instructions
At the Shoot
- 1
Place your camera on a tripod and secure it in position. This allows you more time to perfectly line up your shot.
2Focus on your subject in the camera's viewfinder and adjust the lens until the subject is in sharp focus. With a shallow-focus lens, only the object closest to the lens will be in focus and this shallow depth of field gives the background of the photo a dreamlike, blurred effect. This intended blurring is called bokeh, which is the Japanese word for "haze."
3Snap your photo.
When Editing Photos
- 4
Load your photos onto your computer and open the files using your chosen photo editing software.
5Select the "Effects" tool and click on the "Blur Edges" effect. This will provide you with options regarding the size and density of the blur effect. With some photo editing software, users may select a general area on the photograph which they do not want blurred. The blur effect will then not touch the selected area.
6Experiment with different levels and sizes of blur effects until you find one that best suits your photo. When you have altered the photo to your liking, save the changes to cement your work.
