How to Take Digital Pictures in Black & White With Red Accents

Color enhancement in a black-and-white image allows the artist to creatively interpret a scene and draw attention to a particular object or focal point by adding just a hint of color to a monochrome image. Prior to digital image editing, many photographers would apply color to a black-and-white image using colored inks and pencils. Modern editing software provides the means to apply this technique using isolation tools and color-enhancement options.

Instructions

Set your camera to the black-and-white settings, usually found within the camera's tool-kit menu under special effects. Each camera will differ as to where the setting is located or if the setting exists on the camera. If no black-and-white setting exists, use a photo-editing software program to create a black-and-white image in the computer.

Take the intended picture and place the red object or accents in a prominent location among the rule of thirds in your composition. The rule of thirds refers to the intersecting lines in the composition where an image is cut into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. The focal point, in this case the red object, should fall on one of these intersecting lines.

Transfer the image to your computer using a USB connection to the camera or a flash drive that will accommodate your media card from the camera.

Open the image in a professional photo-editing software program and select the program's isolation tool, usually a lasso or similar icon.

Hold down the mouse button while tracing over the object to convert to red. Apply the color to this isolated object using the color tool. Depending on your editing program, you may also use the mask tool to convert this isolated object to the desired color of red.

Flatten the image, using the flatten setting within your editing program, and save the image. When you add special effects to an image, the program automatically creates layers of each step, which make the file size much smaller. Flattening the image will remove the layers, thus lessening the size of the file. But once you have flattened, you will not be able to access the previous color-enhancement or editing steps.
