Magazine Photo Shoot Ideas

Coming up with new ideas for a magazine photo shoot can be simultaneously difficult and daunting. A commercial photo shoot should produce pictures that have enough shock value to keep readers interested for a relatively long period of time. Magazines exist because readers find them interesting and advertisers find them useful for advertising (and selling) products such as clothes, jewelry, sporting equipment and many other items. Photos are an integral element of attracting and holding readers' interest.

Walking on Water

Capture readers' attention by photographing models who seemingly walk on water, suggests professional photographer Chase Jarvis. Creating such an effect is not difficult. Simply flood a large space with about 1 inch of water. Shoot your models from a variety of angles, including at water level and from atop a ladder. Have dancers move freely about the space, or have models wear dance or splash around. . You can have dancers perform on the flooded space or deck out models in a particular clothing line and have them splash around. This idea has the advantage of being both creative and inexpensive. You could rent out an entire tennis court and purchase visqueen and sandbags to create the space, Jarvis adds.

Swimming in Blue

Lure readers into your photos by tricking them. One way to do that, according to Jarvis, is by drenching your models in water and having them jump repeatedly up and down on trampoline. From the ground, photograph them against a late-afternoon or early evening sky, when the deep blue color evokes the hues of the ocean. The models can be wearing clothes you will feature in the magazine. With some post-production work, it will look like they are swimming under water. The most crucial element in this shoot, according to Jarvis, is the light. Make sure you get the right amount and quality of light for the pictorial.

Dripping in Paint

Drip paint on your models to add bold colors, which will serve as the focal point for your photo shoot, according to Lady Art Looks. The only problem is that using real paint creates a number of complications. First, paint has the tendency to dry right away, which will reduce the amount of time you have to shoot while the paint is dripping and glistening--a more interesting and aesthetically pleasing effect. Second, you will have a hard time getting paint off your model and any clothes used for the shoot. Finally, to some people, the smell of paint can become intolerable after a few minutes. To bypass such difficulties, use condensed milk mixed with food coloring to create a simulated paint.
