Kansas Photography Schools

There are a variety of options for studying photography in Kansas. Several higher education institutions, including Bethel College, Emporia State University and Newman University, include photography concentrations as part of their Bachelor of Arts programs. A specialized undergraduate degree in photography can be obtained through The Art Institutes in Kansas City. In addition, some places, such as the Wichita Center for the Arts, offer informal, non-degree photography courses for youth as well as adults.

The Art Institutes

The Art Institutes International in Kansas City offers a Bachelor's level degree in photography. The degree requires completion of 186 credit hours, or 12 quarters, and is composed of hands-on technical and creative training in the artistic and business aspects of photography. Students graduating from the program at The Art Institutes are qualified for entry-level jobs in digital photography, commercial photography, photojournalism, production assistance and digital retouching.

Bethel College

Bethel College, located in Newton, grants a Bachelor's degree in art with a studio concentration in photography. Art majors at Bethel must pursue a general liberal arts education along with beginning, intermediate and advanced courses in their chosen studio areas. Senior art majors have the opportunity to present original work at the Fine Arts Center Gallery and the Franz Art Center. In addition to the degree program, Bethel College also hosts the Kansas Professional Photographers School, a five-day summer photography workshop geared toward adult students of all experience levels.

Emporia State University

Emporia State University's Department of Art offers undergraduate courses in photography, along with many other visual art forms, leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The university, located in the city of Emporia, contains a variety of art studios and employs art faculty who are highly active in the professional and scholarly worlds. The B.F.A. program emphasizes preparation for graduate study, and requires a mid-program portfolio review.

Wichita Center for the Arts

The Mary Koch School of Visual Arts, part of the Wichita Center for the Arts, provides courses in photography and filmmaking for adult students as well as young artists. Classes are given throughout the year, but special art camps for children take place during summer and winter school vacations. Classes specializing in families and teens are also available. Instructors are typically local professional artists.

Newman University

Newman University, a Catholic university in Wichita, grants a Bachelor of Arts degree in art with an emphasis on photography. While the program provides up-to-date training in digital photography, it also teaches traditional photographic skills, including knowledge of chemical film development, focal length, shutter speed, lenses, filters and aperture settings. Newman's photography program, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of all art forms, requires the completion of 45 core credit hours in general art, as well as nine credit hours in photography.
