Tips on Photographing Old Headstones

Old headstones can be difficult to photograph due to their worn texture. Letters and dates may have faded into obscurity and unless you use a few tricks, they may not even show up when photographed. Most modern photographers use digital cameras, which can make it easier to manipulate images after the photo is taken. But the closer you get to a perfect photo to begin with, the better off you will be.

Sun

To pick up depth in your headstone photos, wait until the sun is low in the sky. The golden color of the setting sun adds an almost surreal quality to old headstones, adding texture and color to the bleached out granite. Get the sun behind you, let it touch the tops of the trees as you put the headstone in the foreground. Focus the camera on distant foliage or landscapes for a late summer effect.

Shadow

Wait until the sun shines across the lettering on the headstone. Try to get shadow into the recesses of the names and dates. Move the camera around the headstone in a circle, clicking off pictures, trying to find the shadows. You can sort them out later to find the right angle. Don't photograph head-on, as that always washes out detail. Try standing in front of the headstone, letting your own shadow cover the headstone, and then use your flash.

Sideways

Put your headstone off-center in your frame. Centering a subject is the mark of an amateur and should be avoided. Let the picture retain a certain casual quality by leaving the subject headstone on one side in the frame. It's okay to focus on the headstone but leave it in the corner or simply anywhere but centered. By doing it this way, you can include landscape, old buildings or a panorama of the cemetery. Your photograph looks more natural this way.

Telephoto

Use your telephoto lens. Get back from your headstone and zoom in on the headstone. If you can't hold still, put your camera on a tripod. Click some pictures from a distance, focus the camera on the headstone and let the background blur. Try different distances. Let another headstone protrude into the frame that is closer to the camera, let it blur as you focus on the headstone in the background to give your picture depth. This is a common trick, placing an object in the foreground to make your photo appear less static.
