How to Make a Scene for Photography

A portrait's scene can be integral to the quality of the photograph. A good scene can tie the background to the subject. Photography scenes can be set up in the studio or outdoors. They can be fun to create and easy to assemble. You can personalize your scene by using items you have around your house as props.

Instructions

    1

Set up the background in your desired location. If you are in a studio, hang a backdrop. If you are working outdoors, find a good location with plenty of scenery that fits your scene's theme. Look for visually appealing places, such as flower gardens and parks. Consider using places that are asymmetric to add character to your background. Use an area that is well lit and large enough to accommodate your equipment.

    2

Set up any props that you may want to use in your scene. This could be anything from plants, to rocking chairs, to musical instruments. Use props that fit a common theme so that the photograph is balanced. If you are doing portrait photography, ask your subject to bring in items that are important to him.

    3

Set up lighting to illuminate key elements of the scene. Placing a strobe light near large props can make your background look less flat in your photograph. Arrange lights to minimize shadows made from the props. Make sure that the lights are not visible in the scene.
