How to pick Art Deco Art

Furniture, curves, & architectural elements all acted as a form of art deco art. Art deco was one of the few periods that didn't have a founding philosophy. The intent was to make things look as good as possible. This influenced the art world as well. Art deco art is perfect if you are going for an old Hollywood feel in your home. It also works if you are a college student who wants something different from the typical posters hanging on your dorm room wall. Here is how to pick art deco art.

Instructions

    1

Focus on the female form. Art deco art isn't about showing a lot of skin. However, it focuses on the human body, or even the face in more of a geometric way. It's an unusual way of looking at humanity without being as out there as modern art. You can still tell that it's a woman, just the angles & shadows are exaggerated.

    2

Dominate with size. If your shopping for art deco art you'll probably see a lot of large posters or over sized elements. This can serve as the focal point to an otherwise bland rental living room. It adds color if you can't paint the walls. Plus, this type of artwork usually had simple lines. The wow factor comes into play just with the sheer size of the piece. Check out the clearance section of bed & bath stores. They often have canvas prints that you can get at a deep discount.

    3

Stick with an art deco palette. Art deco art uses either bright colors or pastels. They usually stick to one color palette per picture. So go for reds & yellows, or for more muted artwork look for sea foams & lavenders. This is an unusual color palette that will have people taking a second glance.

    4

Find an oriental influence. Art deco art was full of cranes, buddhas & geishas. This adds the air of a world traveler to any room. Plus, it has different subject matter than the typical flowers or cottages that you see in many homes & dentist offices.

    5

Look at architecture as art. Many buildings were designed in this style, including the Chrysler Building. This is a common theme of art deco art. If you want to make your own art, try photographing the curves of buildings up close. Look for the signatures of this period, like chevrons. For a more personal touch, take pictures of the buildings in your neighborhood. Blow them up & frame them to turn your snap shots into works of art. You'll begin to appreciate spots that you walk by every day. On Designed to Sell they did this so house hunters could get the fantastic feel of the neighborhood while still inside the house.
