Create digital backdrops that look like professional studio portrait backdrops using functions found in any photo editing software. Use light or pastel background and foreground colors that blend well together, create a cloud pattern and skew the pattern to enlarge and soften the mottled cloud effect. The result is a backdrop similar in color and pattern to those used by professional portrait photographers that blends well with any foreground subject or color.

Open a new project box by selecting "File," "New" in any photo editing software. Select a size suitable for a large project from the size presets presented in the new project box. For example, a workable size is a height of 210 mm and width of 297 mm with a resolution of 240 dpi. Enter the size and resolution information into the appropriate boxes.
2Save the new project by selecting "File," "Save As" and naming the new project.
3Select a background and a foreground color, such as brown and white or gray and white, by locating the fore and background color boxes in the photo editing software's tool bar.
4Choose the "Clouds" option from the "Filter" or "Effects" menu to use the back and foreground colors to create a mottled color pattern within the project box.
5Diffuse the mottling into a softer pattern by skewing the "Clouds" pattern. Select the "Skew" option from the "Effects" or "Shapes" menu. A box appears over the cloud pattern. Position the cursor at each corner of the box, click on it and drag it away from the center of the project box. Repeat with the other four corners until the box is larger and no longer square, but skewed into an uneven four sided shape.
6Save the completed backdrop by clicking on the "Save" icon in the top tool bar or by selecting "File," "Save."
7Use the cut and paste option to paste foreground images onto the new background. This may require that the new cut and pasted images be made into a new layer by selecting the "Save as New Layer" option in the photo editing software's tool bar. This enables manipulation of the new pasted image without affecting or altering the backdrop.
