Shrink wrap provides a protective layer and packaging for artwork and photographs that have been matted. Often the art will remain on display at stores and galleries for some time, and the shrink wrap keeps dust off the art and prevents the art from being handled directly. The transparency of the wrapping still allows the art to be fully visible through the packaging. Shrink wrapping is accomplished with a shrink wrap machine and a heat gun.

Slip your artwork between the sheets of shrink wrap film. Shrink wrap is sold on large rolls with the film in a folded condition. The hot wire that is part of the machine cuts between each package, leaving a sealed film edge, a folded film edge and two unfinished open film edges.
2Bring down the handle that activates the hot wire. The hot wire cuts and seals the plastic wrap where it touches it. This takes only a split second.
3Turn the artwork so that the only remaining open film edge is lined up under the wire. Maintain about one inch between the wire and the artwork. Bring the wire down again to cut and seal the film.
4Turn on a heat gun and fan the film from a distance of 12 or more inches. Move quickly, as the film will begin to shrink and tighten. Lightly heat both sides to shrink the film evenly but not super-tight.
