Methods of Presentation in a Photography Exhibition

Photographers strive to communicate thoughts and ideas through the lens of a camera. Some photograph primarily landscapes -- rural or urban -- while others may specialize in human photography. A photographer, for example, may display a collection of waif-like women to make a statement about body image, while a nature photographer may seek to communicate the sense of calm or majesty found on mountains or at a waterfall. When exhibiting work, photographers must choose how to present their work in a gallery to communicate the artist's intent in putting together the collection.

Choosing a Venue

The theme and venue of a photography exhibition should be related. If the subject of the photos is nature, for example, approach a local zoo or wildlife center. If you want to hold a gallery-style photographic exhibition, use a room that could hold a special event, such as a museum, art gallery or restaurant or club. Use your own home, provided you have enough space. If you want more long-term exposure, however, use a venue that people will likely see often, such as a local coffee shop or mall.

Exhibition Themes

Without an established theme for a photography exhibition, you'll just be displaying a random collection of photographs. A theme should be broad and general; you need to be able to display multiple different photographs that fit under a theme. If you've taken pictures in the Middle East, choose a theme such as the desert, mystery or wanderlust. Themes like these allow you to display many different photographs that communicate these ideas. If, however, your photographs are all of one concept -- photographs of mosques, for example, this theme will do.

Displaying Photographs

After you've chosen a venue, decide how to arrange your photographs before you display them. Many artists frame their photographers in glass on top of some kind of mat. This, however, costs hundreds of dollars, whether you buy the frames or hire a local art shop for the task. There are less-expensive methods of displaying your art, too. You can, for example, glue string on either side of the photos and hang them on hooks on walls. You can also display the photographs on surfaces such as tables or chairs or on easels or music stands.

Arranging Photographs

The last part of organizing a photography exhibition is choosing how to arrange your photos. If you have multiple photo groups with different subjects, arrange your photos according to these groups. If you have a specific story you want to communicate, arrange the photos in the order that you want them to be seen. Indicate this order to guests through signage.
