Professional and amateur photographers alike have special photos they want to frame and showcase for the world. Finding the right mat board to frame your picture can make a good photograph exceptional, and pulling out just the right colors and mood can add value to a gallery sale. It takes time and an artistic eye to find the perfect mat board for a photograph.
Instructions
- 1
Measure your photograph, allowing 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch per side to place behind the mat. This will be the size of the hole you will need cut inside the mat board. For example, if your photo measures 5 inches by 7 inches from edge to edge, your hole should be no larger than 4 3/4 inches by 6 3/4 inches.
2Determine how large your frame will be. If you have a frame already, a good way to figure out the mat size is to measure the glass. If you dont already have a frame, the Luminous Landscape website suggests you choose a mat that will fit in a standard-size frame (such as 8x10 or 11x14) so that you will have an easy reference when you choose one later on.
3Decide which colors of mat board will enhance your photo in the best way. If possible, take your photo and frame (if you have one) to the store where you are purchasing the mats and try different colors of mats with them. Try colors that are not always the obvious choice. For example, if your picture has a little girl in a yellow dress with a blue hair bow, try a blue mat board to pull out the blue. Keep in mind that you can use several colors of mat board to create frames within frames and pull out various colors in the picture.
4Consider the composition of your photograph when choosing the texture of your mat board. For example, if the photo is busy and full of subjects, a plain texture that does not distract from the photo might be best. If its a photo of someone in a lace dress, a mat with a lace pattern texture might look nice. A silver metallic mat board might add pizazz to a plain black and white photo, while a mat board with a brick or adobe texture might be just what a picture of a building needs to make it come alive.
