With digital printing, we've become accustomed to seeing photographs printed on just about anything, but traditional darkroom printing may be more versatile than you think. The same emulsion that coats black-and-white photo paper can be applied to any surface, including wood. Take some time to experiment with photo printing on wood, and you can create two- and three-dimensional artwork that incorporates your photographs in a way that mixes elements of the old and the new.

Heat the photo emulsion in the darkroom under the safe light. Place enough thick emulsion to coat your pieces into a glass bowl. Heat the bowl in a hot water bath until the emulsion is warm, with a paint consistency.
2Prepare your wood in the darkroom, under the safety light. You will need at least three small pieces of wood to make test strips, and at least three pieces of wood in the size and shape desired, all the same thickness. Brush a thin, even layer of warm emulsion on all but one of the larger pieces of wood and allow it to dry.
3Place the uncoated piece of wood under the lens of the enlarger in place of the easel. Insert your negative into the negative carrier and set the f-stop to 5.6. Turn on the enlarger light, and adjust the size and focus on the wood. Use a focus tool, if necessary. Mark the placement of the wood with electrical tape, and turn off the light.
4Replace the uncoated wood with one dry piece of coated test strip wood. Use the uncoated wood to cover all but 1/5 of the strip. Set the enlarger's light timer to 10 seconds, and expose the top part of the wood. Slide the uncoated wood down and expose 2/5 of the piece, repeating until the test strip has been fully exposed.
5Develop the strip in the chemicals; submerge it into the developer first, then transfer it directly to the first fixer bath, skipping a stop bath. After about 30 seconds, place the wood into the second fixer bath for five minutes. Use tongs or gloved hands to transfer the wood from one tray to another. Use the test strip to determine the exposure time. If necessary, make another test strip.
6Set the piece of prepared wood in place under the enlarger lens. Use the tape marks as a guide. Set the timer to the number of seconds determined by your test strips. Expose the wood.
7Develop the wood in the chemicals, giving it a 10-minute bath in the second fixer. Rinse in a water bath for five to 10 minutes. Look at the piece under natural light to see if it needs any adjustment. If it does, make the adjustments and print the photo on the other piece of prepared wood.
