How to Convert Black & White Photos to Color Photos Using Software

If a photo is taken in black and white, there is no way to automatically convert the photo back to its true colors. However, using photo editing software, it is possible to tint the photo with the colors you select. This gives a color effect to the photo. It may not look exactly the same as if it was taken in color to begin with, but you can get it to match up pretty closely with practice and time.

Instructions

Open the photo you want to work on in your editing software.

Select the first area of the photo you want to work on, such as an item of clothing. If the tone of the object is even, you can use the magic wand selection tool. Otherwise, use the lasso or free selection tool to trace around the object.

Click on the hue/saturation option in your editing software. Depending on the software, it my also be called "tint" or "colorize".

Move the slider until you achieve the color tone you want for you object.

Adjust brightness and contrast if necessary to achieve a more realistic look.

Repeat Steps 2 to 5 until you have added color to every area of the photo
