DIY Terahertz Photography

Tetrahertz photography is another name for infrared photography. Many infrared photographers use specially modified film (which is being discontinued) or specially modified digital cameras. Modifying a camera require a lot of technical expertise and can cause a camera to stop working if not done correctly. However, it's quite simple to use a simple DIY technique to turn any digital camera into an infrared camera. This process doesn't work as well for film cameras without the use of infrared film.

Instructions

    1

Attach the infrared filter to the lens. This filter is available at any photo supply store. It blocks out light from the visible light spectrum but passes the infrared light through.

    2

Set the shutter speed on the camera to a very long exposure, for example, 8 to 10 seconds. Although most cameras employ infrared filters, at this shutter speed in broad daylight, infrared light will gradually leak through.

    3

Open the aperture to around f/8 and the ISO to 100. This is a good starting point for getting the correct exposure. The meter on digital cameras is not built to read infrared exposure, so this will only be a starting point.

    4

Check the exposure by reviewing the picture. If the image turns out to dark, you can open the aperture more or increase the ISO. If the image is too light, you will have to close down the aperture.

    5

Take as many pictures as you want/need to get the exposure correct. It will require a certain amount of experimentation to learn how your camera handles infrared.
