How to Remove a Filter From a Lens

Experimenting with different filters on your camera lens can get your artistic juices flowing. Many types of filters are available to make your photographs really pop. Trying out various filters and seeing the effects they produce means you'll have to become proficient at changing them. Removing a filter can be trickier when it becomes stuck on your lens -- something for which the circular polarizing filter is notorious. But using something as simple as a rubber band, you can easily remove a stuck filter.

Instructions

Typical Filter Removal

    1

Ensure that your hands are clean and dry to help reduce slippage during removal of the filter.

    2

Apply even pressure to the filter by spreading your fingers around the edge of the filter. If you are removing a circular polarized filter, grip only the back part of the filter, since the front part rotates freely.

    3

Unscrew the filter from the lens by turning the filter counterclockwise (to the left when facing it head-on) with your fingers, until the filter is free of the lens. Do not squeeze the filter while unscrewing it.

Removing a Stuck Filter

    4

Grip the filter edge with the rubber jar opener or place the rubber band around the edge of the filter. If you are using a rubber glove, grip the filter edge with your gloved hand, evenly spreading your fingers around the edge. Be certain to grip only the back part of a circular polarized filter, whether using a jar opener, rubber band or glove, because the front part rotates freely.

    5

Apply even pressure to the edge of the filter with your fingers, without squeezing.

    6

Unscrew the filter from the lens by turning the filter counterclockwise (to the left, while facing it head-on), until the filter is free of the lens.
