How to Make a 85A Lens Filter Out of Film

Colored filters provide photographers with more creative options, but are often expensive. Used equipment, however, provides for an alternative to overpriced products. By using equipment and film you already own, you can save money and create your own filter.

Instructions

    1

Lay a towel down on your work surface. Wash your hands thoroughly. Have a clean working area, as well as oil-free fingertips, or you risk getting smudges on the film.

    2

Measure the height and width of the filter holder. Take the measurement from the deepest parts of the slots in the filter holder, and not where the filter holder begins. Record your measurements.

    3

Lay out a piece of medium format film on your work surface. Measure the width by using the dimensions you recorded. Mark the measurement with a razor, by making a slight cut. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the film.

    4

Lay the ruler across the film, to create a straight line between the two width marks. Situate the ruler vertically. Trim the excess film.

    5

Line up the ruler on the left side of the film. Mark the height dimensions with the razor blade. Repeat the process on the right side of the film.

    6

Lay the ruler across the film to create a straight line between the two height marks. Situate the ruler horizontally. Cut off the excess film.

    7

Pick up the piece of film with the lens-cleaning paper. Slide the film into the filter holder.
