What Is Lens Color Fringing?

Photographs can sometimes show discoloration around the border of certain subjects in the image. This effect, lens color fringing, causes these photographs to have less sharp appearance and some inaccurate coloring.

Different colors of light travel at different speeds, and different lenses reduce the speed of light. This can result in a dispersion of the light known as lens color fringing, or chromatic aberration.

Some lenses' magnification changes for each wavelength of color. This leads to color fringes.

Purple fringing occurs frequently in digital photography. It appears as a blurred purple border around part of photograph.

Using ultrawide angle and true telephoto lenses increases the likelihood of lens color fringing. Some cameras correct this automatically, but others require you to fix the picture using a program.

Several photo editing programs have a function for correcting lens color fringe. Some sample programs are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Picture Window Pro. Use the program's help function to locate the function.
