How to Make Reproductions of Old Canvas Signs

Old canvas signs are subject to wear and tear as they age, and if they are particularly old, they are likely no longer in production if you want extra copies. You can make reproductions of almost any piece of art, but make sure you are only reproducing artwork that you have the rights to, or that the artwork is public domain, allowing anyone to make additional copies. Once you have a digital copy of the sign, you can print reproductions on canvas or any type of paper you would like.

Instructions

Set the canvas sign up in a location with solid, even lighting so that there are no shadows or areas of the canvas that are not evenly lit.

Take several photos of the sign with a digital camera. Line up the shot so that the entire sign is in the frame with a minimal amount of background showing around the edges. Do not use a flash. You may wish to try different lighting conditions to see which works best.

Connect the camera to your computer with its included USB cable and upload the pictures to a program such as Windows Live Photo Gallery. Look through the pictures and choose the one that looks most like the original sign.

Crop the image to remove the background. Click "Crop Picture" and click and drag the corners of the crop box until they are just inside the edges of the canvas sign. Click "Apply."

Take the image to a photo printing shop or upload it to a website to have it printed on a material of your choice. If you wish to print the photo onto canvas, visit one of the links in the Resources section for shops that specialize in canvas prints.
