Adobe Lightroom lets users organize photos into catalogs, which allows for greater organization. The program works best for photographers who deal with hundreds of large photos. If you have thumbnail images you want to upload, you can create a catalog on the hard drive and transfer your thumbnail files -- or mini JPGs -- from your camera folder. Most newer cameras have thumbnail files, which are necessary to preview the photo on the camera's small screen.

Instructions

    1

Plug in your external hard drive using a USB cable. Your external hard drive holds all your photo thumbnails or mini JPG files.

    2

Open the external hard drive's directory on your computer. Double-click to open the folder. Name the folder "Photos." All of your mini JPG photos must go into this folder.

    3

Double-click the Lightroom catalog and hold the "ALT" key until the "Select Catalog" dialog pops up. This dialog lets you set up where your catalog goes.

    4

Click "Create a New Catalog." Save the new catalog in your external hard drive's folder. Name the new folder "Mini JPG Catalog." Click "OK" to finish.

    5

Launch Lightroom. Connect your camera with a USB to your computer. From the Lightroom program, click "File," then "Import Photos." Find the thumbnail photos on your camera, then open the photos you want to import.

    6

Choose your "Photos" folder on your external hard drive, then click "OK." Your thumbnail photos automatically generate into your external hard drive and catalog.
