Studio Photo Ideas

Operating a photography studio requires much more than a creative eye, magnetic personality and talent behind your favorite lens. Choosing gear and lighting equipment as well as honing your posing techniques and shooting skills are top on the list, but you must also consider shopping for props and developing themes for your clients.

Developing Themes

If you want your clients to come back year after year, offer new themes and ideas each season. The same series of three or four backdrops will start to look stagnant to parents who photograph their children every few months. Think of timeless themes. An old trunk full of old fashion adult clothes and jewelry works well for young boys and girls being photographed while playing dress-up. A closet full of colorful playground balls creates an instant playful spring theme for children. Painted canvas backdrops with patterns, scenery and holiday motifs can be rotated for variety.

Photography Props

Props in a studio are often used to elicit smiles in front of and behind the camera. In addition to stuffed animals and fancy chaise lounges, have a stash of squeaking, rattling and talking children's toys handy. These are used by the photographer to direct attention to the camera or by a mother who needs to soothe an anxious child.

When selecting props for the shoots, purchase a variety of chairs, stools, bean-bags, rocking horses, wagons and colorful ottomans. For adults, offer a range of oversized pillows for casual seated poses on the floor, ornate parlor-style wingback chairs for those in formal attire and adjustable posing tables to create casual leaning poses.

Photography Equipment

Lights with barndoors (top right) are can be used for illuminating backdrops.

In addition to your camera gear, lighting set-up and backgrounds consider additional equipment to make studio photography easier and more creative. Hand-held gold reflectors add a warm glow to pale skin in an instant. Barndoors added to background lights can quickly create rim lighting to show off flowing hair. Eliminate the possible tripping hazard of flash sync cords and go wireless with a remote transmitter attached to the power box and camera's hot shoe.

Posing Techniques

A slight head-tilt adds sincerity to portraiture.

Once the studio is set up, you have to make your subjects look fantastic or they won't use your services in the future. Although digital photo editing can retouch stray hairs and unexpected pimples it can't correct awkward or poor posing. Ask the subject to keep their fingers loose and relaxed. Tight fists and compressed fingers look tense. If it can bend, bend it. Rigid subjects look uncomfortable. Bend elbows, bend knees, tilt the head or gently curl fingers for a natural look. After the standard smiling-into-the-lens images are captured remember to do some informal looking away from the camera poses. A small smile or the look of being "lost in thought" may be the pose that sells.
