There may be times when you want to merge multiple images to tell a story. Sometimes, a single image cannot convey what you are trying to express and combining images will help you to convey your feelings. Before you can merge the images into a single image, however, you will need to prepare the images. Here I will explain the key points to consider before beginning the merging process.

Open all the images you want to merge and compare them. Compare the highlight and shadow values and determine if they will require adjustment in editing. Compare the white balance and color qualities to see if they will look similar when they are merged into a single image. Different color values will make the combined image look unprofessional when merged.
2Use the curves tool or highlight and shadow tools to adjust the images so the color balance of the images is similar. They do not have to be precisely the same, but should still look similar. Keep "eye flow" in mind. In a photomontage you want the eye to travel from image to image without interruption. Different color balance will interrupt the eye flow and interfere with your ability to tell a story with your montage
3The images should be the same size unless your "story" requires one image to be larger or smaller. Use the scaling feature of your photo editing software to adjust the size of each image. During the scaling step, crop any images to make then visually appealing.
4Before you save each edited image, lay them out side by side on the screen to make sure you have achieved your editing goals. If you don't like what you see, then fine-tune the images until you are satisfied.
5Save each image under a new name. To help you during the merging process I find it helpful to assign each new image a number to indicate the proper sequence during merging. It took me a while to learn how to do this, but after I had to reopen each image multiple times to discover the proper sequence position, I learned from the experience. When you are done, you are now ready to create your photo montage.
