How to Build Your Own Photography Lights

Casting enough light on your subject is a common photography task and professional lights easily solve that problem. But if youre on a budget, there are still ways you can make your own photography lights and get good shots. With a few supplies, youll soon have a do-it-yourself studio.

Instructions

    1

Purchase inexpensive work lights at your local Lowes or Home Depot store. These work lights are already on stands, and you can choose one light or strips of lights for more illuminating power.

    2

Look for cheap clip-on work lights with attached reflectors while youre in the hardware store. With a sturdy clipping device, these lights are good for hair lights or for diffusing shadows on your backdrop.

    3
Keep cellophane from direct contact with the work lights.

Clip or tape pieces of colored cellophane over the front of the work light to diffuse the harsh glare and cast a glow. Warm gold tones flatter skin tones, but you can use any color that suits your objectives. Check the lights often and turn them off to cool down if the cellophane is getting too hot.

    4

Cut tracing paper instead of cellophane and tape it over the lights to diffuse the harsh beams. Again, make sure the paper does not get too hot. If youre using the lights for an extended period, attach two wooden skewers to the top of the lights so they extend a few inches in front and position the paper away from the lights surface.

    5

Bounce strong light from your work lights onto a large piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil or painted white for a more diffused effect. For this to work, position your light so it shines away from your subject and onto the foil. Only the reflection from the foil will illuminate your subject.

    6

Try sanding the glass surface of the work lights until it is opaque. This will soften the harsh light and act like a built-in diffuser.
