You can make any photo look like a painting using one of the many filters available in graphic programs, plug ins and websites. Photobucket is one website that makes the process quick and easy. Filter Forge is a plug in to Photoshop that allows you to create a watercolor effect and offers a free trial download. The Adobe Photoshop program itself offers filters that allow you to give a photo the look of a painting as well.
Instructions
- 1
Go to Photobucket.com (see Resources). Click the "Upload now" button at the top of the page. Using the gray drop-down menus, choose where you are "uploading from" and "uploading to." Then hit the "Select photos and videos" button in the center. Now, move the mouse to the top of the picture. This will cause a toolbar to appear. Stop your mouse at "Edit" on the toolbar, then click on "See much more..." at the bottom of the drop-down. Choose "Effects" from the tabs along the top; this will display a variety of buttons above the photo. Choose "Painting." Wait while the program finishes "Painting a masterpiece." Click the "Advanced Options" button above the photo. Adjust the "Fade" slider to where the picture looks as you want. Click "Apply," then "Save a copy."
2Launch Photoshop. Use Ctrl+O to open your source image. If needed, adjust the Hue/Saturation (Ctrl+U), using the sliders for Hue, Saturation and Lightness and click OK. Launch the Filter Forge plugin (Filter>Filter Forge>Filter Forge). Open the filter web page (see Resources) and click on "Open in Filter Forge." With the necessary filter in place you can work out the adjustments needed. To use the factory presets, on the Presets tab, double-click a preset thumbnail. Once you have found one that is suitable, click the Settings tab and try the sliders. Use the "Next variant" button in the "Randomizer" section and click it until you get a satisfactory product.
3Open your picture in Photoshop. Apply a Watercolor Filter to the picture. Use the sliders to adjust "Brush Detail," "Shadow Intensity" and "Texture" to your satisfaction then click "Apply." Duplicate that layer, (Layer>Duplicate Layer). Apply an Emboss Filter, (Filter>Stylize>Emboss) to the newly copied layer. Use a "Height" of about 2 pixels and an "Amount" between 150 -- 200%. Set the Blending Mode for the embossed layer to "Linear Light." Save your new image.
