How to Fold a Large Light Modifier

Light modifiers, also known as reflectors, are used by professional photographers to direct light to areas of a composition where light wouldn't normally be able to reach. They serve to enhance the details of a composition and are extremely handy to have around if you intend to practice serious outdoor photography. Large light modifiers intended for handheld use typically use a sprung steel band in their outer hoop that allows you to fold them easily for storage. While it takes a little getting used to, it quickly becomes second nature after you've done it a few times.

Instructions

    1

Hold the light modifier like the steering wheel of a car, with your hands positioned at nine o'clock and at three o'clock.

    2

Twist the modifier's sprung band as though you were going to produce a figure-eight with the outer band. As you do this, the modifier will not form a figure-eight, but will collapse into three round hoops.

    3

Grasp the three hoops with one hand, and use the other hand to even them out so that they are all the same size. The modifier is now fully folded and can be slid into its carrying case.
