The first roll of Kodachrome was produced in 1935 by Kodak Eastman Co. The vibrant slide film was quickly adopted by photographers when they saw the rich color and brilliant contrast the film had to offer. The film used a revolutionary process called K14 that added color to the black-and-white film during processing. In 2009, Kodak ended its production of the slide film. In December 2010, the last photo lab with the ability to process the film in color closed down its K14 processing line. While you will not be able to use the film as a color slide anymore, it is still possible to get great photographs with it by processing the film in standard black-and-white chemicals.

Load the 35 mm roll into your SLR. Point-and-shoot cameras may give unsatisfactory results as the camera needs to have accessible manual settings.
2Set your camera to "Manual" mode. This can also be called "M" mode on some cameras. Adjust your aperture to your desired number to control your depth of field. The lower the aperture the deeper your field will be.
3Point your camera at your subject and look at the camera's light meter. To shoot on Kodachrome you will need to overexpose your image by one step. To do this, take the shutter speed your light meter reads and use a speed that is twice as long. Remember that shutter speeds work in fractions of a second. The smaller the number on the bottom of the fraction the longer the shutter speed will be. For example, if your light meter says to use a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second, you will double that by shooting at 1/30th of a second.
4Focus your camera on your subject and press the shutter release button when ready to take a photograph.

Process your film in black-and-white chemicals. If you are bringing your Kodachrome to a lab for development, be sure to explain that you need the film to be processed in black-and-white chemicals. The special K14 chemicals used to make color Kodachrome slides is no longer manufactured, and regular color chemicals, or C41 process, will not develop Kodachrome properly.
