How to Capture Everyday Life With Photography

Capturing images of "everyday life" with a camera is far more difficult than it might appear. An "everyday" image must be well-composed, with correct exposure and focus, but still look natural. It requires great skill at spotting interesting images and getting the perfect shot very quickly. Many of the Photo League photographers of the middle of the 20th century specialized in finding the visually dramatic in the everyday and can serve as models for your work. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has an extensive collection of the works of the Photo League school of photography.

Instructions

Still Life

    1

Capture everyday life through objects by looking carefully around your environment. Posed "still life" compositions can look fake. In this style of photography, you work with "objets trouves" or "things found."

    2

Start with your home. Consider which objects convey a sense of human use. Your breakfast dishes just after you have finished eating, a pile of laundry ready to go into the washer or the rumpled sheets just after you get up in the morning, even though they are inanimate, suggest an everyday activity to a viewer. A perfectly neat living room or spotless kitchen is a great image for an architectural magazine, but doesn't suggest "everyday life."

    3

Take your camera outdoors and walk around your neighborhood. Shoot images that have stories. Garbage waiting for collection, neatly packaged recycling, kids' toys strewn around a yard or a broken abandoned umbrella in a grate all tell stories. Evaluate the potential of a shot by asking yourself what sort of narrative you could build around it.

Everyday Human Life

    4

Avoid a posed look when shooting people in everyday actions by not signaling when you are shooting.

    5

Try mounting your camera on a tripod, pointing a wide angle lens in the right direction and moving a few feet away from the camera. As your subject goes about normal tasks of doing laundry or washing dishes, use a remote shutter release. Since your subject won't be aware of when you are shooting, you will get a natural look.

    6

Distract your subject or take shots when your subject is not aware of you when shooting hand-held. A long telephoto lens will place you where you are less likely to be obvious. Another option is shooting with a wide-angle lens, but holding the camera casually at waist height rather than looking through the viewfinder. With a wide angle lens, you will have everything from approximately six feet to infinity in focus and you will capture a wide field of vision. While crowd scenes and friends are good subjects, do not do anything that might be interpreted as stalking, and never photograph children without written parental permission.

Aesthetics

    7

Use natural light. Flash photography looks artificial. Don't try to take out shadows with fill flash. Harsh shadows are part of the "everyday" image.

    8

Experiment with grain. For a classic look, try high speed, ISO 400 or even 3200, black and white film.

    9

Avoid over-processing. Extensive use of post-processing gives the impression of the artificial world of advertising rather than ordinary life.
