While black and white photographs can be very dramatic, extracting colors from a black and white photograph can make a stunning photograph even more exiting. Use photo editing software such as Photoshop, Gimp or Kritna to extract the color and further enhance the excitement and uniqueness of a black and white photo.
Instructions

Click "File" and then "Open" from within the software window.
2Select the black and white photograph that you would like to add color to and then click "Open."
3Select the "Lasso" selection tool from the tool bar on the left side of the workspace.
4Select the area of the photograph that you would like to add color to by clicking and holding down the mouse while slowly tracing around the desired area with the "Lasso" tool.
5Press "Control" and "J" on the keyboard to create a new layer of the traced selection. This allows you to adjust the section where you want to add color while keeping the original photograph intact.
6Click "Image," click "Adjustments" and then click "Hue/Saturation" to open the hue/saturation tool window.
7Click the "Colorize" check box in the lower right-hand corner of the hue/saturation window.
8Adjust the hue, saturation and lightness of the photograph using the sliders in the hue/saturation tool window to apply the desired colored effect to your photograph.
9Click "File" and then "Save As" to save the colorized black and white photograph as a different file name from the original photograph.
