Usually, the goal of a light box is to illuminate an object without any shadows so that there is only a clean, white surface behind the object. Adding a slight, gray shadow can add drama to art photography, though. This is very simple to accomplish, even if your lightbox has a stationary, permanent bulb fixture.

Instructions

    1

Unscrew the finial at the top of the lamp and remove its lampshade.

    2

Decide where you want the shadow to be in your photo.

    3

Plug in the small lamp and place it outside the light box wall opposite the position where you want the shadow. So, if you wanted the gray shadow on the right side of the object, you would need to put the lamp on the left side of the light box.

    4

Turn the lamp on. The light from the lamp should diffuse as it passes through the wall of the light box and cast a soft shadow on the other side of the object.
