How to View Metadata in Photo Programs

Digital cameras imprint a set of data, such as the date, time, type of camera and lenses used, on each image you take. This information is called metadata. Many software programs on the market are solely dedicated to giving you access to metadata, but only a few commonly used photo programs allow you to view it as part of a broad photo-enhancing package. Commonly used programs are Adobe Photoshop, Windows Live Photo Gallery and Google Picasa.

Instructions

Open the photograph in Photoshop to learn its metadata.

Go to "File" and scroll down to "File Info." A "File Info" dialog window will appear.

Click on "Camera Data." This will show you data such as the type of camera and lens used to take the picture, the aperture and focal length and the date and time the picture was taken.

Select "Description"; here you can add keywords and a description of the picture, as well as a title.

Go to "IPTC"; here you can view or add the photographer's title and their home address, website URL, phone numbers and email addresses. IPTC is a metadata standard developed for professional photographers by the International Press Telecommunications Council. Other categories include "Video Data," "Audio Data" and "Mobile SWF."

Import the photos you wish to view. To do this, click on "Home," then choose "Import." Select the camera or folder with the photos you wish to edit, click "Import," then click on one of the two choices offered and click "Next." Choose the photos and click "Import."

Click on "Tag and Caption," select "Properties." A scroll-down window will appear where you can choose from "Rename," "Resize" or "Adjust Time." For each of these metadata categories a dialog window will open when you click on it.

Click on "Rename" to see an "Information" window at the bottom right-hand side of the photo gallery. There you can change the name of the photo.

Select "Resize" to view the resize dialog window. If you resize your photo, click on "Resize and Save" to save the changes.

Click on "Adjust Time" to view the "Change Time Taken" dialog window. If you edit the time, click on "OK" to save and return to the main gallery.

Turn on your computer and open Picasa.

Open the photos you want by typing a search term in the "Search" box of the library. You can also search your photos using Picasa's preset filters.

Click on "Show/Hide Properties" panel to view your photos' EXIF metadata. Another way to view it is by right-clicking (on a PC) or "Control-clicking" (on a Mac) a picture then choosing "Property" (for PC) or "Get Info" (for Mac.)
