Foam core is a light-weight piece of polystyrene lined with either black or white paper on both sides. White foam core board can be used as a reflector in portrait, still-life or outdoor photograph. Reflectors bounce light into a subject to reduce shadows,
Instructions
- 1
Buy a piece of white foam core from an office supply, hobby, art supply or framing store. Get at least an 18" x 18" piece. Small pieces can be used for still-life photographs, while larger pieces can be used for portrait or outdoor photography.
2Extend the legs of the light stand. Light stands can be purchased from photo supply stores. If you do not have a light stand, you can use a tripod.
3Raise the center post of the light stand to desired height, usually around 6" if you are shooting a portrait.
4Attach an A-clamp to the light stand or tripod pole.
5Attach the foam core to a second A-clamp.
6Attach the clamp with the foam core to the handle of the first clamp so that the foam core is in front of the pole.
7Aim the flash or sun at the foam core.
8Bounce the light off the foam core into the shadow of the subject.
Add a third clamp to the light post near the bottom of the foam core if you need to change the vertical position of the board. Turn the clamp toward the reflector to push out the bottom of the board to the desired angle.
To move the foam core horizontally, raise or lower the light stand.
