The Kodak Photo CD, first introduced in 1990, is a CD-Recordable disc built for storing photos. In the mid and late 1990s, their quality and ease of use made them popular with professional photographers, but by the early 2000s, the Photo CD format's relatively inefficient compression scheme meant that Photo CD files were significantly larger than JPEG files of similar quality, and thus less convenient for transmission across the Internet. By 2004, Kodak had phased out the format. Many software packages support loading Photo CD images, but few do it the right way.
Instructions
- 1
Download a trial or full version of one of the software suites known to successfully open Kodak Photo CD files: Cerious Software's ThumbPlus, pcdtojpeg, Corel's PaintShop Photo Pro or PhotoPaint 8, IrfanView, Brothersoft's pcdMagic 1.0.4, or Digital Light & Color's Picture Window.
2Insert the Kodak Photo CD into your computer.
3Find the image files on the Photo CD. These files, with names ending in ".PCD," are usually in the \PHOTO_CD\IMAGES directory on the Photo CD.
4Try loading the ".PCD" files with other imaging software you might have on your computer. If that doesn't work, proceed to Step 4.
5Right-click on the PCD file and open it with one of the other programs you've downloaded.
